Can Wealth Management Firms Use Claude Cowork?

Sam Farrington, CFP®·August 9, 2026

Yes, wealth management firms can use Claude Cowork, and firms across the industry already are. But Cowork ships with one limitation that should decide how your firm uses it, and it lives in Anthropic's own documentation rather than the launch headlines. This guide covers what Cowork can do for a wealth management firm, where the compliance line sits, and how advisors can get real value from it without creating a problem their compliance team finds later.

What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is the agent mode inside Anthropic's Claude desktop app. Chat answers questions, and Cowork does work. You point it at a folder, describe the outcome you want, and it reads files, creates documents, browses the web, and runs multi-step tasks without you prompting at every step.

In February 2026, Anthropic launched a set of financial services plugins for Cowork, including one built specifically for wealth management. Anthropic describes that plugin as helping advisors analyze portfolios, identify drift and tax exposure, and generate rebalancing recommendations. The plugins are open source, they run on paid Claude plans, and Anthropic's own materials are clear that they draft work product for review by a qualified professional rather than finished advice.

The launch matters because it confirmed something a lot of us suspected. Anthropic is building for this industry on purpose, and wealth management is one of the named priorities. I covered the broader push in what Anthropic's financial services agents mean for independent advisors.

Is Claude Cowork Compliant for Wealth Management Firms?

Not for regulated workloads that require an audit trail, and that answer comes straight from Anthropic. Cowork activity is not captured in Audit Logs, the Compliance API, or Data Exports on any plan tier, including Enterprise. Anthropic's documentation says Cowork shouldn't be used for regulated workloads for exactly this reason.

Here's why this matters for a wealth management firm. Your books and records obligations don't pause because the work happened inside an AI agent. If an advisor uses Cowork on anything touching real client information, there's no centralized record of that session for your compliance team to review or produce in an exam. Chat conversations are captured on enterprise plans. Cowork sessions aren't.

That single fact draws the line for how firms should think about Cowork today. It fits work built on public-facing inputs. Anything that needs a supervised, auditable record belongs somewhere else until Anthropic closes this limitation.

If your firm is thinking about how examiners approach AI more broadly, I walked through the five documents they now request in What Do SEC Examiners Ask Financial Advisors About AI? The audit question above fits directly into that preparation.

What Are Firms Like LPL Actually Doing With Claude?

They're building on top of it rather than handing advisors the raw tool. In February 2026, LPL Financial expanded its partnership with Anthropic to build AI integrations across its network of more than 30,000 advisors, announced the same day Anthropic launched the financial services plugins. Orion expanded its own Anthropic relationship the same week.

The pattern matters more than the names. Anthropic provides the building blocks, and firms build private plugins powered by their own data and controlled by their own compliance teams. That's the enterprise path, and it takes time, because firm-level integrations move at the speed of vendor due diligence, data infrastructure, and supervisory procedures.

Which is exactly why the biggest near-term opportunity for advisors at these firms is the work that doesn't wait for any of that.

What Can Advisors at Wealth Management Firms Use Cowork For Right Now?

Everything built on public-facing inputs. Your content, your voice, your niche research, your marketing, and your drafts. None of it requires client data, none of it triggers the audit trail problem, and none of it will be covered by your firm's eventual enterprise rollout anyway, because your voice can't be centralized.

The setup is a dedicated Cowork Project pointed at a folder that contains only content and communication files. Your voice guide, your niche notes, and your past posts live there. Client data never does. From that folder, Cowork can draft a week of LinkedIn content, research the questions your niche is asking, and turn one newsletter into ten platform-ready pieces, all in your own voice.

If you're at a broker-dealer with content restrictions, the same setup works inside your firm's approval process. Drafts still go through review the way any content does. What changes is how long the draft takes to produce.

I walk through the full setup in the practical guide to Claude, Cowork, and Skills, and if you want to see what pre-built workflows look like, the Claude Skills guide covers the tools my subscribers run every week.

How Should a Wealth Management Firm Get Started With Claude Cowork?

Start with a written policy before anyone opens the app. The firms handling this well answer three questions up front. Which tools are approved, what data can touch them, and who reviews the output. A one-page AI use policy covers all three and matches what examiners now ask to see.

From there, keep the early use cases on the safe side of the line. Content, marketing, and internal research come first, and anything involving client information waits until your firm has an approved, auditable path for it.

Then make the data decision explicit. Cowork can access any file the logged-in user can access, so the folder you point it at is the control. A dedicated folder with no client data in it turns the audit limitation from a risk into a non-issue for these use cases. If you want a plain-language walkthrough of what counts as protected client information, I wrote one in the PII and NPI guide for advisors.

If you'd rather not build the policy work from scratch, the Compliance-Safe AI Playbook includes a sample AI use policy, language swap tables, and a pre-publish checklist. And if you're rolling this out across several advisors, Amplify for Teams covers the firm-level version of everything above.

The Bottom Line for Wealth Management Firms

Claude Cowork works for wealth management today, as long as you respect the line Anthropic itself has drawn. No regulated workloads that need an audit trail, no client data in the folders it touches, and every output reviewed before it ships. Inside that boundary, it's the fastest path I've seen for an advisor to produce real content and real marketing in their own voice.

The enterprise integrations from firms like LPL will handle the client-data side eventually, on their own timeline. Your voice, your content, and your visibility were never going to come from a firm-wide rollout. That part has always been yours to build, and the tools are finally good enough to build it in hours instead of weekends.

Your brand doesn't have to wait for the rollout.
